1. Identification: Spondylus butleri (Reeve, 1856), Mayyun Island, Red Sea, in pocket of debris on reef in 6m depth, from Mozes Yaakov collection, dived in 1974, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: Is it ok to present a shell upside down? In this case Icouldnt resist the impulse and I hope you will forgive me; the piece looks dramatic in this position and uniquely it is a shell which is equally beautiful and spiny on the lower valve. From a rare location comes this piece which was obtained from the Yaakov collection, a fully documented specimen which will prove useful to the taxonomical collector for its excellent provenience, and I think it will also appeal to the aesthetic collector who will find this piece to be exceptionally beautiful with wavy body of irregular shape and set with prominent ridges producing stiff and upright spines of rather spatulatated form.The shell displays characteristics which make it easy to distinguish from Thai specimens which are probably the only correctly named at the moment , but as we know, taxonomy in Spondylus is going to see many changes in the near future and all documented material is especially valuable when new names are being designated for populations and forms which went undescribed so far. Please note that this shell comes from natural reef habitat as you can see from the underside. It was not taken from a shipwreck.
